We were on the road just before 10.00am and headed along the Gwydir Hwy towards Warialda and had a quick stop at a lookout to check out the scenery.
Cranky Rock Nature Reserve
A quick stop at the Warialda information centre informed us of a little gem of a spot only 8km out of town. Cranky Rock was just 3km off the main road heading towards Inverell. A short walk across a suspended bridge led us to a little natural rock formation. The pictures below don’t do it justice.
Leaving Cranky Rock, we headed for Inverell for lunch by the river, stocked up with some supplies and headed for Texas, Qld. The road was sealed all the way except for some roadworks, but was very bumpy. 70-80km/h was plenty fast enough. 3.30pm we were in Queensland, by a whole 50m and set up camp along the Dumaresq River. At an estimate there was already 30 – 40 vans set up along both sides of the river and still room for more.
Within an hour of setting up camp we were greeted by Les and Glenda Locock, who are friends of my parents whom we were supposed to catch up with some time while we were in Queensland. They had camping for a few days only 50m up the river from us and saw the Tassie number plates. Neither of us had any idea where the other would be.
